Plans, usage and billing

Free has hard monthly caps and is never billed. Each paid plan’s fee is usage credit: compute, bandwidth and builds are added up at the same rates on every plan, and you pay the fee or your usage, whichever is more.

Every environment counts as an app, static sites included. You can run one team on Free; other teams need a paid plan. There is no fee per person or per app.

How usage is priced

Usage rates on every paid plan
WhatPriceMeasured as
Compute$0.015 per GB-hourMemory size in GB × hours awake. CPU is included. Asleep or paused is not billed.
Bandwidth$0.02 per GBData sent out, in GB of 10⁹ bytes.
Builds$0.005 per minuteEach build rounded up to the minute.

Months are calendar months, in UTC. On Starter, an app of 512 MB awake for 200 hours uses 100 GB-hours, or $1.50, well inside the $5 the plan includes: the bill is $5. Usage past the fee is added to it: $8 of usage on Starter is a bill of $8, not $13.

Free and its caps

Free monthly caps
CapPer monthAt the cap
Compute50 GB-hoursThe team’s apps sleep until the month ends
Bandwidth5 GBThe team’s apps sleep until the month ends
Build minutes120 minutesNew builds are refused; apps keep running
  • The caps are checked every few minutes. When compute or bandwidth is used up, every app in the team is put to sleep with the status asleep: monthly limit, and the owner is emailed once. Visitors see a This app is paused page.
  • They cannot be woken by hand that month. They wake by themselves when the next month begins.
  • When build minutes are used up, deploying shows this month's build minutes are used up, and pushes do not build. What is live keeps serving.

Free never bills you, and there is no card on file.

Budgets

On a paid plan, a team owner can set a monthly budget on the team’s Usage page, under Monthly budget.

  • The budget is the most you’re willing to pay in a month: the whole bill, the plan fee included. Set to put the apps to sleep, your bill won’t go past it (give or take the last few minutes of usage).
  • It must be more than the plan fee, by at least $1 (so $6 or more on Starter), and at most $100,000. The fee alone never reaches a budget.
  • The team’s owners are emailed when usage beyond what the fee includes has used 80% of the room the budget leaves above the fee, and again when the bill reaches the budget, once each a month. With a $10 budget on Starter’s $5 fee, that’s at a $9 bill and at $10.
  • At the budget you choose what happens: Email the owners; keep running (the default), or Email the owners; put the apps to sleep.
  • Apps put to sleep by the budget stay asleep until the month ends or the budget is raised. Raising it wakes them.

Changing plans

Upgrading

Choosing a plan from the dashboard is coming soon. A larger plan’s sizes, Always on and limits apply to the team as soon as it is on the plan. A budget that isn’t more than the new plan’s fee counts as the fee plus $1 until you change it.

Moving to a smaller plan

Sizes above the new plan’s limit are reduced to it, Always on is turned off where the plan has none, and apps beyond its app count are paused, newest first. Custom domains and people already added are kept, but no new ones can be added past the limit.
